It takes a village to raise a child. Are the communities in the North East living up to this responsibility? That is the question we propose to answer through a local research project, called North East Understanding the Early Years. Twenty-one schools throughout northeastern Saskatchewan participating in this important project funded by the government of Canada’s Understanding the Early Years (UEY) Initiative. The project involves the kindergarten students attending elementary schools, teachers, parents and individuals and groups in our community that encourage parents and children. The information gathered, through a teacher survey, parent interviews, assessments of children and an inventory of early childhood services and resources, will paint a picture, so to speak, of what our children are like and how the parents and community enhance children’s learning.
If we know how our children and communities are doing, we can work together to ensure that our children have the best possible opportunities to grow and learn especially between the ages of 0 and 5 years.
